This novel, still unfinished and its fate uncertain, is the main centerpiece of the “angsty Blue Period” years of 1999-2002. Soul Music is an introspective novel about a young man named Peter Tan who bears a lot of resemblences to myself. He has to navigate the fears that come with the death of a non-believing friend, the confusion of sexuality in an evangelical environment, and, of course, music. Very, very teenage, and very, very angsty. The new material from chapter 21 onwards is far superior to the older material written in less mature days. This novel used to serve as my therapy; now at last I can concentrate on simply writing a compelling story.
